Our greenhouse gas management

Zyxel's greenhouse gas emissions management policy is based on the ISO 14064 standard. Our current greenhouse gas inventory includes direct (scope 1) and energy indirect (scope 2) sources. In 2021, we reported 76.84 tonnes of scope 1 and 486.5 tonnes of scope 2. Our total greenhouse gas emissions were 563.34 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.

As no manufacturing takes place at our Taiwan-based Worldwide Headquarters, electricity consumption is primarily limited to office operations, such as air conditioning and lighting. As such, we implement a series of actions to ensure the efficiency of the air conditioning and lighting systems in the office facilities.

We set a target to save 15,000 kWh annually in electricity consumption. In 2021, we replaced obsolete heat sinks in its cooling towers to increase heat dissipation and saved 14,825 kWh electricity.

Our water resource management

Despite abundant precipitation and a strong network of reservoirs, water shortages remain one of the most challenging crises Taiwan faces. Zyxel sees water resource management as a vital element in achieving sustainability. As Zyxel Taiwan-based Worldwide Headquarters is not involved in any manufacturing activities, its entire water footprint stems from employees’ daily water usage and air conditioning. Our water consumption rate is trending downward. The annual water consumption in 2021 was 11,228 metric tons, a 17% reduction from the previous 13,548 metric tons. However, the annual wastewater discharge increased in 2021 due to water tower cleaning.

Zyxel’s green initiative reaches a new milestone with the transition to renewable energy

Replacing coal- and gas- and oil-powered energy with renewable energy plays an essential part in reaching zero-emission, which is an indispensable part of our efforts in reaching the ultimate 2050 net zero goal. In 2019, Zyxel American Headquarters implemented a 200kW solar system to supply approximately 90 percent of the power required to operate its Anaheim-based facilities. This marks an important milestone in Zyxel’s aggressive program to reduce its carbon footprint and improve energy efficiency. We're aggressively evaluating renewable adoption at our Taiwan-based Worldwide Headquarters and other regional offices.

In 2022, Headquarters employees who participated in the Walkathon event generated over 156 million steps, equivalent to the annual carbon sequestration of 1,565 trees.
