Zyxel technology powers DIGI Spain’s first-of-its-kind 10G offering
Main challenge
Looking to offer Spain’s fastest fiber optic service, DIGI Spain needed powerful, reliable edge technology equipment that could enable up to 10 Gbps of speed.
Initially rolling out in Madrid and gradually expanding across the country, the new network – built on XGS-PON architecture – would offer customers the bandwidth needed to handle increased activity at home. With more people working remotely and streaming quickly becoming a primary form of entertainment, DIGI understood it needed to enable WiFi 6 capabilities sooner rather than later.
And because a high-speed connection is only as good as customers’ ability to access it, DIGI knew it needed to find a trusted, experienced vendor that could provide a reliable ONU.
Solutions
DIGI ultimately selected Zyxel Communications’ XGS-PON certified AX7501, a dual-band wireless AX6000 10G fiber IAD, offering ultra-high-speed fiber connection for triple-play services.
Built for better bandwidth
The AX7501’s WiFi 6 technology optimizes bandwidth utilization to increase network capacity and the number of simultaneous streams. This allows for more subscribers to enjoy superior connectivity with extremely low latency.
Repairs without interruption
With the TR-069 standard management specifications, the AX7501 allows service providers to manage, configure, monitor and diagnose the device remotely without interfering with end-users and saving overall operating time.
Main story
When it came time for DIGI to branch into the next generation of fiber optic solutions, it knew working with a partner like Zyxel would help it ground its XGS-PON-based offering with infrastructure from a tried-and-true partner.
After selecting the AX7501, DIGI worked closely with Zyxel to help customize the device to its unique needs. It opened a certification process, testing the device to ensure it could truly enable up to 10G in the field, and remaining in contact with Solutions30 (Zyxel partner) and Zyxel’s R&D team for any necessary tweaks. Customization and tests were successful, and the device was ready for sale in September 2021 – helping DIGI beat competitors to become the first 10G service provider in Spain.

Results
With the new PRO-DIGI service, DIGI offered customers a latency of 1 millisecond – a huge improvement compared to other Spanish service providers’ offerings. To ease customer transition to the AX7501 hardware, DIGI’s technicians are providing one-on-one support to configure the device and answer questions whenever necessary.
