Green products strategy

Following the introduction of ISO 14006 Environmental Management Systems — Guidelines for Incorporating Eco-design and integration of the requirements of ISO 9001 Quality Management System and ISO 14001, the "Coordinated Information System" comprised the Green Product Database, Life Cycle Analysis System, 3R and Disassembly Report Database, and Restriction of Hazardous Substances Management System. Through its systematic and structurally coordinated green product management system, Zyxel asserts its commitment to launching outstanding products while preventing pollution and reducing environmental impacts.

Green product development process

Product design

To reduce the environmental footprint of its products, Zyxel has carried out numerous initiatives through the product design stage to minimize negative environmental impacts.

Built-in SFP/SFP+ cage

Zyxel products feature a built-in SFP/SFP+ cage to support multiple network architectures. This helps service providers use the same products for service upgrade without creating waste during migrations from one internet technology to another.

Production and packaging

Eco-friendly compact design: Zyxel dedicates itself to designing products with the optimum size without compromising product integrity. A clear example is Zyxel CPE products, which adopt foldable stands and ultra-thin exterior case designs to reduce package volume.
Eco-friendly package material and printing: Zyxel reuses and recycles cartons and boxes of its products. Brown box packaging, made of recyclable and sustainable materials which reduce the use of plastic coatings and color paints, accounts for over 95% of the packaging for Zyxel products.

Disposal and recycling

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)

Zyxel complies with the WEEE and battery directives (including but not limited to the European Union) and marks separate collection for both on every product.

Packaging recycling

In accordance with packaging directives, Zyxel provides clear recycling information regarding packaging, user guides, and quick start guides that comply with international standards and national regulations.

Plastic recycling

In compliance with the ISO 11469, plastic products weighing more than 25g are identified as recyclable. These products include mark(s) on the surface with appropriate standard symbol(s) or abbreviated term(s) set between the punctuation marks "›" and "‹". read moreexpand_more

To ensure that all parts of Zyxel products are disposed of and recycled in a legal manner with minimal impact on the environment, Zyxel registers directly with the National WEEE Registry or the approved collective Compliance Scheme for WEEE in a few countries to make sure that all distributors in collaboration comply with the national WEEE directives.

Zyxel has labeled its products with the appropriate WEEE logo and added extra relevant information about the WEEE regulations to its customers. The crossed-out wheeled bin symbol on Zyxel products or packaging reminds customers that the product should not be disposed of as unsorted waste. It is your responsibility to dispose of, or recycle your end-of-life equipment properly, to prevent potential negative impacts on the environment and human health. Customers should follow the disposal method of electronic waste and electrical products in their region.

WEEE-relevant information for Zyxel products can be obtained from the Product recycling library.

Hazardous-free substance

Zyxel complies with global regulations and prohibits the use of PVC, CFR, phthalates, and relevant hazardous substances by its suppliers. Regulations that are confirmed with Zyxel are listed below:

  • Directive 2011/65/EU and its amendment (EU) 2015/863, RoHS
The Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment.
  • Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, REACH
Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals. The newest list of SVHC, as per the ECHA website.
  • Directive 94/62/EC and its amendment, PPW
    Packaging and Packaging Waste.
  • Directive 2006/66/EC and its amendment, BATT
Batteries and Accumulators and Waste Batteries and Accumulators.

Energy conservation

Zyxel continues to reduce the energy consumption of its networking products and improve energy efficiency to meet and/or exceed existing regulations. It complies with the rules for voluntary energy efficiency parties, such as the following:

  • Energy-Related Products Directive 2009/125/EC and amending Regulation (EC) No 1275/2008
  • ENERGY STAR Small Network Equipment
  • EU Code of Conduct (CoC), etc., after considering the usage stage for the entire life cycle of an electronic product

To achieve higher energy efficiency, Zyxel incorporates energy efficient features into product designs in accordance with the Level VI requirement introduced in 2016. Following Zyxel features illustrate how the company supports environmental protection.

IP68 standard compliance

Zyxel high-end outdoor routers are compliant with IP68. This is the highest international standard supporting operation at extremely dirty or dusty locations while also providing superior resistance to humidity and moisture. This feature helps service providers ensure longer product life, thus reducing waste.

Wireless on/off button & power on/off button

Users can easily control wireless access and save energy with the wireless on/off switch on the rear panel of the Zyxel routers, toggling wireless access in just seconds. The on/off power switch makes it easier for users to save energy in just seconds.

Power-saving mode

Zyxel products enter power-saving mode when the Ethernet links become inactive.

Wireless scheduling

To save power and reduce wireless radiation when the wireless network is not in use, Zyxel WiFi devices can be configured to turn on or off automatically according to the user's wireless usage patterns. This feature is available upon customer request.

Intelligent PoE

The Intelligent PoE technology allows power to be supplied over the same Ethernet cable, thus eliminating the need for costly electrical wirings.

Wake on demand

Zyxel devices reduce power consumption by constantly remaining in power-saving mode until there is network activity such as internet access or an internet call.

In addition to energy-efficient product features, Zyxel also selects external power supplies with low power consumption for its networking products to reduce energy loss during product operations. All external power supplies selected by Zyxel comply with Level VI energy efficiency requirements and regional requirements such as ErP Regulation (EC) No. 278/2009 in the EU, US CEC in the US, CSA C381.1-08 in Canada, and the International Efficiency Marking protocol.

Conflict minerals

Aiming to help stem the trade in four minerals – tin, tantalum, tungsten, and gold – that finance armed conflict or are mined using forced labor, Zyxel perform comprehensive due diligence within the supply chain to ensure the above minerals are not derived or sourced from mines in conflict areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) or illegally taxed on trade routes, either of which are controlled by non-governmental military groups or unlawful military factions.

Zyxel also promises to follow the requirement of the Responsible Minerals Initiative and the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas (CAHRA). Zyxel also asks businesses within its supply chain to disclose the use of smelters by completing the latest Conflict Minerals Reporting Template (CMRT) form.

Below is the conflict mineral management procedure.

Zyxel conflict mineral management process

The Zyxel conflict mineral management process includes the following five practical steps.
  • Zyxel establishes a conflict-free mineral policy and requirements.
  • Merge conflict minerals into the requirement and evaluation of the supply chain and ask suppliers to sign the Zyxel purchase contract and declaration to assure its implementation.
  • Define the scope of investigation and carry out evaluations annually to trace the source of minerals used in the supply chain.
  • Develop an annual supplier onsite audit plan to achieve above 25% complete rate per year. Track down the improvement status of those with low performance.
  • Take escalation actions immediately and request the supply chain continue to address the critical issues until the risk is acceptable, otherwise suspend cooperation, as necessary.

Annual mineral source survey

Zyxel conducts an annual survey to trace the source of conflict minerals for its products.
